University level courses

Radioecology is a multidisciplinary science, building on aspects of biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, maths, geology, environmental sciences, ecotoxicology and much more! Many universities have graduate and postgraduate courses in many of these sciences which would provide a good basis for future studies or careers in radioecology. It is impossible to list them all here, however, the list below provides those courses we are currently aware of:

Belgium

SCK-CEN

The SCK-CEN Academy organises a variety of training courses on various nuclear related topics, including radioecology.

France

IRSN

Each year, IRSN offers new topics for doctoral research, defined in close collaboration with the academic world. A majority of students have a 3-year doctoral contract funded or co-funded by the Institute. For more information see Theses at IRSN.

 

Germany

Leibniz University of Hannover

The Institute of Radioecology and Radiation Protection (IRS) is involved in the promotion of young scientists, starting in several high schools in the Hanover area and extending to the supervision of bachelor/master and doctoral theses in the field of radioecology and radiation protection. The IRS conducts several courses, including one for the acquisition of radiation protection expertise according to StrlSchV (ca. 1200 participants per year).

 

Japan

IER-Fukushima University

The Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) offers Master's and Doctoral programs specializing in Environmental Radioactivity. The institute provides valuable research opportunities with a practical focus, leveraging the unique environmental context of Fukushima, Japan.

Norway

Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU)
NMBU has a BSc program in Environmental radioactivity and a MSc program in Nuclear- and Environmental Science consisting of compulsory and optional course modules and a research topic. Apart from NMBU staff, experts from other national and international institutions teach on the courses. All courses are taught in English. Courses organised by NMBU:

  • Experimental Radioecology KJM351 (10ECTS)

  • Assessing Risk to Humans and the Environment KJM360 (10 ECTS)

  • Environmental pollutants and ecotoxicology FMI310 (15 ECTS)

Portugal

IST

IST teaching and training on nuclear sciences and technologies are held by DECN (Departamento de Engenharia e Ciências Nucleares - Department of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering). DECN has been engaged in a Master Degree in Radiation Protection and Safety and very soon it will be announced the launching of a PhD programme in “Nuclear Sciences and Engineering” which has recently been approved by the IST school council on the 8th of November 2023.

 

Spain

University of Barcelona

The UB organises several Masters related with radioecology and radiation protection:

  • Master in Analytical Chemistry. With theoretical courses that include radiochemistry and radioecology concepts: Analysis and Behaviour of Pollutants in Aquatic and Terrestrial Environments (3 ECTS); Radiochemistry and Surface analyses (3 ECTS). And a Master Final Project (30 ECTS), which can be done in the context of investigations dealing with radiochemistry and radioecology.

  • Master in Environmental Radiological Protection. Interuniversity master to be implemented from academic year 24-25.

  • PhD programme in Analytical Chemistry and Environment. It offers research lines dealing with radiochemistry and radioecology: Inorganic and radiochemical pollutants in the environment.

University of Basque Country (UPV/EHU)
