Ever since its foundation in 1948 up to this day, the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health has strived to preserve its multidisciplinary approach to research. The Institute’s researchers have devoted their work to investigating and studying the physical and biological aspects of occupational health, environmental hygiene and human health, as well as to spreading knowledge regarding industrial hygiene and especially radiation protection of humans (dosimetry) and environment (biota and abiota protection) including research on NORM residues and low level medical radioactive waste. The Ruđer Bošković Institute is regarded as Croatia’s leading scientific institute in the natural and biomedical sciences as well as marine and environmental research. The Institute of Radioecology and Radiation Protection (IRS) performs ultra-trace analysis of radionuclides, investigates their migration in the environment and estimates dose to humans due to exposure to anthropogenic and natural radionuclides. The key research foci are related to nuclear waste disposal, consequences of major nuclear accidents and on a forensic understanding of the nature of a contamination. The IRS trains radiation protection officers on a commercial basis and contributes to the establishment of standards (e.g. DIN ISO 11929).

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an independent public body established under the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1992. The other main instruments from which we derive our mandate are the Waste Management Act, 1996, the Protection of the Environment Act, 2003 and Radiological Protection (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2014.
The EPA carries out rigorous and continuous testing to ensure that environmental radiation remains within internationally agreed and legal safety limits. These tests ensure that we are quickly aware of any change in environmental radiation in Ireland, and able to provide the public with any health warnings and protection advice necessary.

The Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER) was established in 2013. The major objective is to undertake basic and applied research on radionuclides behaviour in the environment, including forests, rivers, lakes, and oceans, and the effects of chronic radiation exposures on biota. IER is ideally located close to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident site and affected areas, allowing ready access to diverse field sites. IER is open to the world and aims to create a Centre of Excellence in the field of environmental radioactivity by integrating practical experiences and expertise of the international scientific community.

Environmental Chemistry Section/Isotope laboratory at MINA studies the harmful effects of radiation on organisms and the ecosystem as a whole, to improve the protection of people and the environment. The focus is on long-term basic research to improve the ability to accurately assess the radiological impact from both naturally occurring and man-made radionuclides and the risk from radioactivity in the environment, also combined with other stress factors. This is done by focusing on key factors that contribute to the overall uncertainty, including exploiting and developing advanced tools and methods to better manage these risks.

Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLOR) is a research institute with a wide range of functions to protect people and the environment. Our primary activities are monitoring of radioactive contamination in foodstuff and environmental components, calibration of dosimetric instruments and monitoring of occupationally exposed workers as well as general population. We conduct research on matters dealing with radiation protection, radiobiology and radioecology. GIG-PIB is a research and development institute, working for mining industry, local authorities and environment protection business. Main institute activities are focused on waste management, water and air protection in relation to heavy industry restructuring. The research on radioprotection and radioecology is carried out by the department Silesian Centre for Environmental Radioactivity (SCER) and mainly is focused in enhanced natural radioactivity (NORM). However, since 2016 SCRS, based on its experience on environmental radioactivity, has been strongly involved in location sites characterization for first Polish NPPs.
