The ERICA Tool

The ERICA Tool is a freely available software system based upon the tiered ERICA Integrated Approach, assessing the radiological risk to terrestrial, freshwater, or marine biota. Originally developed under EURATOM funding the ERICA Tool (implementing the ERICA Integrated Approach  is now probably the most widely used model to estimate radiological risk to terrestrial, freshwater and marine wildlife.

Results from the Tool can be put into context using incorporated data on dose effects relationships (using the FREDERICA database,currently is being updated and is therefore not available, but it will be very soon) and background dose rates. The Tool has simple transport models embedded to enable conservative estimates of media activity concentrations from discharge data if measurements are not available; the transport models are taken from IAEA (2001) Generic models for use in assessing the impact of discharges of radioactive substances to the environment. CROM

The Screening Model for Environmental Assessment CROM (Código de cRiba para evaluaciOn de iMpacto), was born as a computational tool implementing the more complex models included in the Safety Report Series No 19 (SRS-19) of the International Atomic Energy Agency, for the transport of radionuclides in the environment, produced as a discharge in an installation, and all their associated parameters. The development of the tool was performed by the CIEMAT and the Polytechnic University of Madrid and co-sponsored by CIEMATENRESA and IAEA. The different CROM versions can be freely downloaded here.

Several versions of the CROM code have been produced since 2007. The latest one being CROM 8, which allows the integrated assessments of effective doses for humans and absorbed doses for biota. CROM 8 includes default data for 163 radionuclides for humans, from which 63 have data for biota. Two sets of Reference Animals and Plants are also available, one from ICRP and accepted by the IAEA and another from ERICA. The code doesn’t include the screening levels (tiers) included in the SRS-19 for humans or in the ERICA-Tool for biota. The code allows performing assessments in rivers, lakes, and marine environments and in contaminated atmosphere and soils.

Actually, the Open Platform CROM (OP-CROM) is being developed, a flexible tool which would allow the implementation of any model, which would be able to run under different computer platforms (operative system and computer architecture) and which would use and produce every data and parameter as separate text files, in opposition of using an established database as was the case in the CROM family.

Radon dose calculator

Estimating the dose rates from Rn-222 and short-lived daughter products can be done using an allometric method to scale parameters for the respiratory system and consequently whole body of wild animals which is now (Vives i Batlle et al 2017)  included in the ERICA Tool. However, some specific cases, e.g. calculation of the radon dose to plants, can only be done using the original stand-alone radon dose calculator developed under the ICRP Task Group 72.

Ar - Kr - Xe dose calculator

Before the last official release an of the ERICA assessment tool, An Ar-Kr-Xe dose calculator was developed, which has remained in use to enable the calculation of dose to biota arising from external exposure to Ar-41 and Kr-85, which fell outside the ERICA tool's original capabilities (Vives i Batlle et al 2015).

D-DAT - Dynamic Model for Ecosystem Risk Assessment 

A dynamic tool for the assessment of radiation doses to marine biota (D-DAT) is available to simulate dynamically the uptake and turnover of a number of radionuclides by aquatic biota. The approach incorporates a three-compartment biokinetic model parameterised with biological half-lives, concentration factors and retention curve data allowing for the representation of multicomponent release. Radionuclides considered are 99Tc, I-isotopes, Cs-isotopes and 241Am. In 2023, a new version of the tool, called D-DAT-simple, was released as part of IAEA project MEREIA for training purposes. This model is set in ModelMaker 4 format and is also released “as seen” only for evaluation purposes. D-DAT-Simple dynamic Tool  (Version for ModelMaker).

RESRAD-BIOTA

The RESRAD family of codes is developed at Argonne National Laboratory. To assess exposures from the environmental contamination of RESidual RADioactive materials. RESRAD-BIOTA is used to evaluate radiation exposures of nonhuman biota, including flora and fauna, in a terrestrial or aquatic ecosystem. It implements the U.S. Department of Energy's graded approach methodology for evaluating radiation doses to aquatic and terrestrial biota (DOE-STD-1153-2019). It calculates absorbed radiation doses to various biota organisms from contaminated environmental media.

BiotaDC v.1.5.2

The Program BiotaDC, developed on behalf of ICRP by A. Ulanowski and A. Ulanowski (Jr.) is a complement to ICRP Publication 136: Dose Coefficients for Non-human Biota Environmentally Exposed to Radiation.  The programme enables the calculation of DCs for internal and external exposures of organisms with user-defined masses, shapes, and locations in the environment and for all radionuclides in Publication 107 of ICRP. It can be freely used for educational, research, and not-for-profit purposes, without fee and without a signed licensing agreement provided acceptance of the disclaimer terms described by ICRP.
