Research stay of Joan Serra, PhD student (2024)

Joan Serra, a PhD student at the University of Barcelona (Spain), will make a research stay of three months in the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) to learn several aspects on naturally occurring radionuclides (NOR), as for example the smart-Kd approach of HZDR and I apply it to his own Kd datasets. His stay, planned for January-March, 2024, is partially funded by ALLIANCE.

Workshop: of the ALLIANCE working group NORM (2023)

The workshop took place the 6th and 7th of June 2023, in Granada, Spain. It was organised by Dr. Mohamed Larbi Merroun (University of Granada), and by Dr. Thuro Arnold and Dr Susanne Sachs (HZDR, Germany) coordinators of the ALLIANCE NORM working group..

Paper: Can stable elements (Cs and Sr) be used as proxies for the estimation of radionuclide soil-plant transfer factors? (2022)

Research stay of Antonio Newman, PhD student (2022)

Antonio Newman is a joint PhD student of University of Granada (Spain), and HZDR (Germany). In 2022 he made a research stay at the Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (Dresden, Germany) with partial financial support of ALLIANCE. During his stay research for his PhD thesis entitled “Investigation of the interactions of microorganisms with uranium in anthropogenic contaminated waters as basis for the development of a bioremediation technology” was done.

Research stay of Yihua He PhD students (2022)

Yihua He is a joint PhD student of CNRS (France) and HZDR (Germany). In 2022 he made a six month stay at the HZDR laboratory (Dresde, Germany) to obtain analytical results for his PhD thesis. The stay allowed him to learn and apply spectroscopic, microscopic and analytical methods available at HZDR to facilitate the interpretation of the macroscopic data. These investigations will contribute to a mechanistic process understanding, which is the base for the improvement of radio-ecological models. His research stay waspartially funded by ALLIANCE.

Collation of Ukrainian/Russian/Belarussian publications on ecology and biodiversity in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (2020)

Recipient: Chornoby Center for Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Radioecology (Ukraine) via UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology 

Knowledge of the ecology and biodiversity of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is of value when planning and interpreting radioecology studies. Being aware that there were    papers on this published in Russian or Ukrainian, or in some instances in English but in Ukrainian journals, the ALLIANCE funded a collation of papers and reports with titles and abstracts translated into English publications

Paper: Radiocesium concentration ratios and radiation dose to wild rodents in Fukushima Prefecture (2020)

Recipient: Donovan Anderson (Fukushima University). 

This paper was partly funded by an ALLIANCE travel grant to lead author Donovan Anderson (Fukushima University).

Workshop to identify future research priorities for human foodchain modelling (2019)

Recipient: Ciemat, Spain

In September 2019, a joint workshop between the Radioecology ALLIANCE Human Foodchain Working Group and the CONFIDENCE project was held in Madrid. The approximately 40 participants included representatives from regulatory bodies, industry, governmental agencies and the IAEA. The aim of the workshop was to identify future priorities for radioecological research with respect to the human food chain; discussions are summarised in Beresford et al. 2020.

Workshop of the Topical Roadmap working group on NORM (2022)

The workshop took place the days 18 and 19 of June 2019, at HZDR in Dresden, Germany. It was organized by Dr. Thuro Arnold and Dr Susanne Sachs, coordinators of the ALLIANCE NORM working group.
